{GIVEAWAY} Tips to Encourage Healthy Hygiene In Our Kids – Win A Dettol Hamper

{GIVEAWAY} Tips to Encourage Healthy Hygiene In Our Kids – Win A Dettol Hamper

Winter has officially arrived and with it comes a sleuth of Viruses and Germs.

Having two boys in playschool it’s safe to say trips to the doctors’ office are a pretty common occurrence in our household. My husband is the OCD hygiene policeman in our house. He is constantly telling us to clean up, wash hands etc. I’m not sure if it’s his OCD kicking in or more a germ phobia but safe to say its due to him that we wash our hands all the time. He is absolutely correct though, educating our kids from a young age about hygiene is half the battle won.

Creating Healthy Habits

Recently, I’ve made one small change to our hygiene routines and I’ve seen a world of difference. Immediately after fetching the boys from school I give them a dollop of Dettol Instant Hand Sanitizer In the car and then immediately when we enter the house, the first thing they must do Is wash their hands. This year (touch wood), we are yet to suffer from any major tummy bugs or viruses.

Luckily at my son’s school, they have already taught them to combat the spread of germs, they need to sneeze or cough into their bent elbow. I made the mistake once of sneezing into my hands and my 4-year-old was very quick to correct me and tell me how it should be done.

Together with Dettol here are some ways to teach our children the importance of hygiene. You know that hygiene is important, but how can you make your child understand to prioritize it? Energetic kids have no time and patience for hand-washing, nose-blowing, and tooth-brushing!  By making learning fun, it’s more likely to become a good habit.

Tips for promoting healthy hygiene in kids:

  • Sing a song while washing hands. They say the correct amount of time to wash your hands is to sing happy birthday twice over (or 20 seconds for children that can count). Use a proper disinfecting hand wash, lather (Without leaving the tap on), getting in between all the fingers, and sing! It’s actually not as long as I initially thought and the kids love it, they keep asking whose birthday it is today.
  • Play games and make it fun! To add to the hand washing, we played a simple paint game to highlight the spread of germs, and just how much washing you have to do to get them off! Paint your hands and pretend to sneeze into your hands. From there go about your regular day. I placed disposable items around to ensure easy clean up. We pretended to “have lunch”, drink some juice, played ball etc. Then step back and look at all the paint everywhere! Aadam has a little melt down when he saw just how many “germs” had spread. He started to cry and said he wanted to wash them all off! Straight to the basin we went where he immediately washed his hands, and then earned a star on his rewards chart.

  • Feather activity – We all know the struggle in trying to teach kids how to blow their noses. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to get your 3-year-old to “push air out” through their nostrils, Yusuf ends up sniffing his back in! Try the Feather activity – Get two feathers. Cover your mouth with your hand, and then blow the feather across the table using only your nose. Show your child how to do it, and then have a race! Whoever can get their feather to the other side of the table first, wins. Once your child is used to blowing air out her nose, introduce tissues. Don’t forget to wash your hands after!
  • Reward good hygiene – Dettol have made it easy to make learning fun by creating a hygiene hero toolkit for kids. You can download yours from here, and it includes a hygiene chart, a fun game, activity book and a rewards chart. Making learning fun is the best way to remember the importance of hygiene. Download yours and you’ll suddenly see an increased awareness of hygiene in your kids. Of course, they are waiting for a prize once all the stars have been filled in.

  • Make it Special – Keep it engaging for your children. For example; I know when I buy liquid soaps for Aadam’s favourite colour is purple, and Yusuf’s green. I buy soaps in their favourite colour and I quickly see how they run to make sure they get their favourite colour. Another great way to make it special is to buy matching wash cloths or a special stool.

I think it’s important to remember we don’t want to create any OCD disorders in our kids, we also don’t want them to be “afraid” to do things as they will get dirty. Nothing we do could ever avoid all the germs our kids are exposed to. I’m a firm believer in a child SHOULD be exposed to dirt and a few germs to build up strong effective immune systems. My boys love playing in mud and getting dirty, they love animals and pretending to clean the kitchen. A sign of a good day for me is when they come home super dirty! Thanks to Dettol we are equipped to make clean up a breeze. The boys take their handy hand sanitizers to school. Accessorised with a handy silicon strap this waterless hand sanitizer goes everywhere with us. From the car, to the bike park and even attached to the boy’s school bag, it’s always available when they need it. The convenient wet wipes are also in mummy’s bag of tricks, ready to be pulled out when we need it. Dettol has also recently launched another convenient way to protect your family. The Dettol “Soft on Skin” Disinfectant Liquid with Aloe Vera. Launched at the end of March this contains Aloe Vera which is so soft on skin, its perfect for bath time! A pop a little into their bath at night, or especially after an active day to ensure that we are protected. Ease of mind helps me sleep peacefully at night!

Just by practicing simple hygiene habits and encouraging them in our children we can help raise strong, confident, healthy children. Thankfully Dettol makes this so much easier for us by providing us with products that have the incredible disinfectant properties that Dettol is known for.

Natural Cold and Flu Remedy With Letibalm – the balm for nose and lips

Natural Cold and Flu Remedy With Letibalm – the balm for nose and lips

I think its safe to say that Winter is on our doorstep. In terms of fashion, I am definitely a winter baby. I adore the boots, scarfs and coats and feel much more comfortable dressing up in Winter’s cozy layers then wearing flip flops and shorts. One thing I can’t deal with however is the havoc it causes on my skin. Over the last week I have noticed the change in the boys skin, their cheeks are dry, red and starting to get a bit chapped and they have also had a rough time with runny noses becoming dry and sensitive from all the blowing and wiping. Its time to pull out the humidifier and stock up on tissues.

Thankfully Letibalm can help keep your lips, nose and the skin between your nose and lips soft and protected. It’s the only balm on shelves that has been specially designed to care for lips, nose and the skin in between, so you don’t have to reach for multiple products to do the job of soothing and softening, and they have one specifically for children as well! For moms, It also acts as a fabulous primer for lipstick, with all the matte trend lipsticks around it serves as the perfect lubricant to help glide the lipstick over with ease. We all know the matte look is not so great with peeling lips!

Letibalm gently moisturizes dry skin, helps to repair painful cracks and calms irritation. It also creates a protective layer on the skin to prevent further chapping.  Thanks to natural decongestants menthol and camphor, Letibalm also helps to ease breathing. (I can hear every mum breathing a collective sigh of relief here).

The kind folks from Letibalm sent me the most incredible Honey/Lemon Winter Remedy to help fight of colds and flu naturally. I’ve been using this combination for years but was quite shocked at how long it can be stored.

You’ll need:

1 cup of honey

2 lemons sliced

A chunk of freshly sliced ginger

Layer the lemon slices, ginger and honey in a sealable container/jar. A layer of lemon slices, a chunk of ginger and a big spoon of honey, repeating until you get to the top. Seal and place in the fridge for at least 12 hours for the flavours to infuse together. Stir before use as natural separation may occur and then add a big heaped teaspoon to your hot tea/water. If sealed this can last up to 2 months in the fridge. Keeping hydrated is half the battle won in winter and using this natural combination helps relieve any uncomfortable cold and flu symptoms.

Letibalm is available at a recommended retail price of R69.90 from Dis-Chem, selected Checkers stores and independent pharmacies. It comes in 3 variants:

  • Letibalm fluid (10ml tube) – RRP R69.90
  • Letibalm (10ml jar) – RRP R69.90
  • Letibalm Paediatric (10ml jar) – for children 0 to 8 years – RRP R69.90

Here are some top tips to caring for your nose and lips this winter:

  1. Keep the skin well-moisturised.
  2. Use super soft soft tissues or toilet paper with aloe vera or calendula.
  3. Gently pat or blot the nose rather than wipe.
  4. Apply Letibalm nose and lip repair balm to protect, moisturize and help heal the skin.
  5. Wash with lukewarm water, avoiding harsh soaps or exfoliators.
  6. Use a saline spray to keep nasal passages moist.
  7. Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air (this really makes a huge difference with this kids skin).
  8. Drink plenty of water, or herbal teas.

Top Childrens’ Book Picks for Ramadan

Top Childrens’ Book Picks for Ramadan

Ramadan (a Muslim holy month of fasting, where we commemorate when the Quran was revealed), is fast approaching and I’m busy preparing myself as a working mum, for an even busier month ahead. Meal plans, activities for the children and stocking up the house. A like to create as much excitement for my boys around Ramadan as possible.

Teaching my kids to love books and reading is hugely important to me, as is teaching my children the history of Islam. Naturally in Ramadan we increase our reading a bit more, I normally put away all of their other books and we only focus on our Islamic ones. They are at that “in-between” age at the moment, where they are a little too young to start Madrasah (Islamic studies for kids) but are at the perfect age to learn about Islam and its history. I try to increase their knowledge by reading Islamic books at home and encouraging learning in everyday tasks and crafts.

Suhayla Kids is my go to for all Islamic books and educational toys. In Johannesburg I don’t particularly like driving into Fordsburg/Mayfair and dealing with parking and traffic. SUHAYLA kids is an online store and has the best, most up to date titles, follows global trends and they deliver nationwide (they have even done deliveries to Botswana). Their customer service is second to none, and Taahirah’s personalised notes and quick delivery makes every customer feel special and unique.

These books are great for Muslims and Non-Muslims alike. Teaching other children about Ramadan and why their friends families are “fasting” teaches understanding and respect. They have also been great helping my family (who aren’t Muslim) understand our traditions and celebrations more.

Here’s a list of my top picks for Ramadan:

Night of the Moon – Hena Khan

I ADORE Hena Khan’s books. She has such a beautiful, simple style of writing and this book in particular is both my boys favourite (apart from Ilyas and Duck which we will get too). Its also a great book to teach little ones about the cycle of the moon.

“The sighting of the Moon’s first crescent begins the month of Ramadan for Muslims all over the world. This vibrantly illustrated story invites children to experience the traditions of the month through the eyes of a seven-year-old girl named Yasmeen, who watches every night as the moon grows and shrinks and finally disappears. When the moon’s first crescent reappears, it’s time to celebrate “The Night of the Moon” and the gift-giving holiday of Eid – when Yasmeen has a wonderful gift in store!”

Available from Suhayla Kids for R230.

Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns: A Muslim Book of colours – Hena Khan

I got this last Ramadan and we still love it.

“With breathtaking illustrations and informative text, this book magnificently captures the world of Islam, celebrating its beauty and traditions. This book uses objects found in many Muslim cultures to teach colours. With simple language suitable for even the youngest readers, a young Muslim girl and her family guide the reader through the traditions and colours of Islam.”

Available from SUHAYLA kids for R120.

Ilyas & Duck and the Fantastic Festival of Eid-al-Fitr – Omar S. Khawaja

One of the boys favourite’s (and mummy’s too). So much so that my son wanted to dress up as Ilyas for World Book Day this year.

Part of the highly-acclaimed Ilyas & Duck series! Eid-al-Fitr is here!

“It’s time to celebrate! But what is Eid all about? Join Ilyas & Duck in this fantastically delightful story as they explore the fun and excitement of Eid while learning about the charitable nature of it all. Eid has never been so much fun!”

2015 Moonbean Children’s Book Awards Silver Medal (Multicultural – Non-Fiction picture book)

Available from Suhayla Kids for R235 (and so worth it).

Hassan and Aneesa love Ramadan – Yasmen Rahim

We love this series, another one we love is the “Hassan and Aneesa go to the Masjid”.

“It’s the night before Ramadan and Hassan and Aneesa are very excited for this special month to begin. During Ramadan, they will read the Qur’an, give charity, share food with neighbours, and try to fast as their parents do.

Follow Hassan and Aneesa on the first day of Ramadan and find out why they love it when this holy month arrives.”

A steal at R50 from you guessed it, SUHAYLA kids

On our wishlist:

I haven’t got my hands on these yet but am determined to add them to our collection this year.

Its Ramadan, Curious George – Hena Khan

One of the most popular books in the UK, and proving to be so here too (Its currently sold out and on my wishlist too).

It’s the first day of Ramadan, and George is celebrating with his friend Kareem and his family. George helps Kareem with his first fast and joins in the evening celebration of tasting treats and enjoying a special meal. Then, George helps make gift baskets to donate to the needy, and watches for the crescent moon with the man in the yellow hat. Finally George joins in the Eid festivities to mark the end of his very first Ramadan.

R125 from SUHAYLA Kids for R125.

Migo & Ali: Love for the Prophets – Zanib Mian

I LOVE the fact that this book tells a summarized version of each prophet.

“This delightful hardback book, with 164 full colour pages, contains vibrantly illustrated stories of the prophets, from Adam (as) to Muhammad (saw). These stories are concise, and told in engaging, child-friendly language. A question and answer session after each story is also unique in its style, depicted as a conversation between the two lovable characters. Ali pretty much asks Migo the questions that will be on your child’s mind.”

R275 from SUHAYLA kids

Allah Tells Me – Ali Gator

This book just looks like a beautifully simple introduction of the Five Pillars of Faith in Islam.

“This book introduces young children to the 5 pillars of Islam through beautiful illustration and gentle words that will develop both a consciousness of Allah as well as a curiosity to learn more.

InshaAllah (God Willing) this book will inspire young hearts to learn about & love Allah.”

R75 From SUHAYLA kids.

That’s our top list! I would love to hear some of your favourites too. ALL of these books are easy to read with no uncomplicated language or descriptions, perfect for young minds. The bright illustrations help children remember and I cant wait to put them all out for our Ramadan book corner this year.

If you are in Johannesburg next week (3-6 May 2018), SUHAYLA Kids will be at the Eid Shopping Festival at the Dome (Stall C5). They will have a wide selection of their Islamic books, toys, decor and more, all to inspire and expand young muslims minds. Including one of our favourites, the Dua Pillow.

Keep an eye on the blog or subscribe to follow some of the cute Ramadan crafts I have planned over the next month!

Sliding Into Fun With Ster-Kinekor’s New Kiddies Cinema

Sliding Into Fun With Ster-Kinekor’s New Kiddies Cinema

Sandton City has launched its new family fun level and its made such a huge difference. My issue with Sandton was that it was never really “kid friendly”, Joburg still has a lot to learn in comparison to Cape Town with our Malls here. The shopping centre has launched a new area of the mall being dedicated to family fun, entertainment and food. With it comes a freshly revamped cinema complex, which boasts the second kids’ cinema in the country (the first being in East Rand Mall) additional luxurious Cine Prestige 3D cinemas with their own VIP Lounge area and exclusive catering offers.

We were invited to a movie at the newly revamped Ster-Kinekor Cinema in Sandton this past weekend. The new layout has an express counter as well as 15 self service terminals where you can not only book your ticket, but order your catering combo as well! This reduces queuing time hugely, perfect for parents not wanting to stand in long lines.

This was the boys very first movie and we were all excited to be a part of the experience. Aadam kept asking me today if we could “pulllleeeeease go to the movies again”. If you’re planning on watching a Kids Movie, there’s an entire “waiting area” to keep little ones busy, with tables filled with colouring pages,  PS4 gaming stations and its very own  snack kiosk section. We watched Sherlock Gnomes which releases in South African on May 11th – Sherlock Gnomes comes together with Garden gnomes, Gnomeo & Juliet, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of other garden ornaments across London.

While the movie  catered to mum and dads sense of humor a little more, the movie house itself is a kids playground, literally. With a slide going down one side of the mall ending with a ball pit, the kids got to slide down the length of the movie house before the show started. There were squeals of delight as they ran up the stairs and slid down the slide again and again, and again! I was a little shocked that they actually sat through the whole movie. The Cinema has Bean bag chairs up in the front for kids, and thankfully, normal comfy leather seats for mum and dad at the back.

We started off the day by sliding into Hamley’s World and then Slid into the movies as well. It was such fun! Almost makes up for the lack of play area that Sandton has always had. After the movies we headed to Hamley’s World (the first ever in Southern Africa), where the boys raced some remote bumper cars and took a trip in a Hot Wheels 3D experience.

The new “family friendly” level in Sandton comes complete with a Halaal Spur, finally one in Joburg with a decent sized play area for the kids. As much as I love Rosebank, the play area in the Spur is just far too small.

Thank you Ster Kinekor for a fun filled morning! I have a feeling this has started something and we will be back many many more times. The good news is, if your are on Discovery Vitality, your child can watch movies for free before 7pm at Ster-Kinekor Cinemas (under the age of 18). Find out more by visiting  www.sterkinekor.com or download the SK App on your smartphone.

Review: Eucerin’s DermoPURIFYER Range – has it really made a difference?

Review: Eucerin’s DermoPURIFYER Range – has it really made a difference?

The DermoPurifyer range has had a bit of a makeover and three new products have joined the range – Micellar Water, The Skin Renewal Treatment and the Mattifying fluid. All the formulas are enriched with exfoliating acids, in sleek modern packaging.

I never expected this result. I will be completely and utterly honest, I have never noticed such a dramatic difference from using a single product before. I received the Eucerin DermoPurifyer range a little over a week ago, and was fully prepared to write a review after about a month, but here I am 9 days later, that is how great a difference I have seen. This past year I have battled with my skin, whether its age, city living or lack of sleep my face has taken a beating and I started getting small little pimples all around my jaw line. I don’t have “oily” skin as per say, just your typical T-Zone, so I have battled with “normal” acne skincare products as I find they dry out my skin too much, causing it to be tight and uncomfortable.

I certainly have my hero products in the range, and there are a few that I’m not one hundred percent in love with, keep on reading to find out my thoughts.

EUCERIN DERMOPURIFYER MICELLAR WATER

I have only recently started using Micellar water in my skincare routine, in fact I never really knew when to use it. My routine this time around has been at night to use Micellar water before I cleanse to remove all excess make up and oil, and then I go in with the toner after I cleanse. This one is quite gentle in comparison to others I have used. It’s also loaded with humectants, like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, that attract water into your skin, keeping it well hydrated. It leaves my skin feeling clean and soft, but I did find it didn’t remove make up as effectively as others (Tracers of mascara still remained).

EUCERIN DERMOPURIFYER OIL CONTROL CLEANSING GEL

I’m obsessed with the pump action of this product. It makes it so incredibly easy to use and the bottle just looks so refined. Its lightweight, not too think and not too foamy. It uses gentle surfactants that strip away only excess oil, not all the oil. Despite the fact its out there fighting wars with the acne causing pollutants on your skin, its gentle enough that I don’t feel my skin has been stripped of its protective barrier.

EUCERIN DERMOPURIFYER OIL CONTROL SCRUB

Eucerin DermoPurifyer Oil Control Scrub has a small amount of lactic acid in it, the beads and pore-refining micro-particles gently exfoliate the skin, unclogging the pores and refining skin texture at the same time.

I have used this twice I think, typically exfoliating once a week. It definitely left my skin smoother and brighter, with the little pulp particles lifting all dead skin. After exfoliating I used my L’Oreal Pure Skin Clay face mask. It would be nice if Eucerin had a mask in this range as well.

EUCERIN DERMOPURIFYER OIL CONTROL TONER

This is possibly my least favorite in the range. I prefer more natural toners and steer away with anything from alcohol it in. I find it dries out my skin and leaves it tight and normally use a toner that is as close to good old rose water as possible. I found this toner to have too much alcohol in it, and could smell it before i even applied it to my skin. That being said, this didnt strip or dry out my skin as much as other alcohol based toners do. My go to before trying to range was the Eucerin DermatoCLEAN Clarifying Toner which i may go back to .

EUCERIN DERMOPURIFYER OIL CONTROL SKIN RENEWAL TREATMENT

This is my hero product. Literally. I know its probably a combination of everything, but I’m giving a large portion of the credit to this bad boy here. The DermoPurifyer Oil Control Skin Renewal Treatment is one of the newest additions to the range.

It has a blend of 10% Hydroxy Complex which is made up of highly effective peeling agents − Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Polyhydroxy Acid , they treat breakouts and prevents them from coming back. This triple action combination removes and exfoliates dead skin cells from the surface of your skin so your pores won’t get clogged up again. It boots collagen production to firm up your skin, while the Salicylic Acid gets deep inside the pores and unclogs them from within. I literally noticed a difference with all those pesky white heads around my browline within one week.

It’s a lightweight texture and sinks in quickly into the skin. I’ve been using it at night, straight after cleansing and toning. It doesn’t feel too strong on my skin at all. After application I do get a slightly tingly feeling on the areas where I had breakouts, but this lasts about 20 seconds and is gone. My skin is quite sensitive, It hasn’t been red, or dry once!

All these products have lightweight textures that absorb quickly into the skin. None of them have dried out my skin. My pores are visibly smaller, my skin smoother and the affected areas of my face have reduced and are less inflamed. I haven’t tried any of the moisturizers in the range, I’ve been using the Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age SPF 50 together with my normal retinol day cream.

I would absolutely recommend taking the time to use this range if you have been battling any sort. I feel so much better about my skin and cant wait to see how it continues to improve!

Before

After , see all the little bumps around my eyes and jaw line have almost all dissapered.

DIY Magnetic Wall with Magwall SA

DIY Magnetic Wall with Magwall SA

When we moved into our current home there was a wall (correction, cupboard) in our Kitchen that was a real eyesore for me. Previous tenants had hung things up with double-sided tape, which they then obviously tried to remove and it had left horrible scratch marks everywhere. This surface quickly became our boys “art wall” (largely to cover up the scratched). They proudly come to me with their most precious creations and ask to put it up on the wall. Who am I to say no?

I came across Magwall whilst browsing the internet one day and was instantly mesmerized. MagWall is a high quality paint primer with metal properties that can transform your wall, and other surfaces such as glass and wood, into magnetic receptive surfaces. It has a fantastic range of magnetic products that can be used to create  engaging, fun, educational environments around you. Their offering is absolutely perfect for young kids, schools or even corporate offices and their product range varies from shapes, educational maps, and even photographic magnetic paper to print your precious memories on. I knew instantly that i wanted to do something with this product in our home.

Let me begin by saying I haven’t even begun to do this product justice. I have visions of redoing the boys play room with a mountain style blackboard paint across one length of the wall. That’s future planning though, and would require a bit of reorganization in our home.

Instead, I took our blank bare kitchen wall/cupboard, which is the first thing you look at as you walk into the kitchen and transformed it into our family board/ memory wall. Now I am NOT a painter, In fact, I’m one of the most impatient people when it comes to finer details (ie: waiting for paint to dry in between coats). I was pleasantly surprised with just how easy the process was, and how quick the paint dried. I even got my handy helpers involved 🙂

First coat of Primer

The process was pretty straight forward, I started by prepping the surface. This took a bit of elbow grease and some spirit vinegar, to remove any grease. I then took the Magnetic Paint Primer  and did three undercoats of this. This is the primer that creates the magnetic stick, after the third coat you can test it to see if your magnets stick. Mine did, so I didn’t bother with a third. Once that was dry i painted two coats of the blackboard chalk over it. The dry time in between was only about 2 hours, thankfully it dried to touch in about 30 minutes so i didn’t have to worry about the boys coming and putting their fingers into sticky paint.

I am so thrilled with the result. The cherry on top for me are the accessories. My family is literally scattered across the globe so when I came across the magnetic world map I knew I had to get my hands on that. I also have a variety of letters and numbers to leave special notes on the cupboard or to practice our alphabets with the boys. My 2-year-old has been practicing his shapes and colours and creating his own pictures with the shapes kit and I absolutely ADORE being able to print our precious memories onto a magnetic photographic paper.

Next on my list to buy would most definitely be the magnetic weekly planner. To be able to wipe off and easily adjust schedules would be a lot easier than writing it out on a pad of paper like we currently do. I also want to create a chore board for the boys.

So if you are looking to add a bit of fun into your home and create a unique feature, give Magwall a thought. It’s perfect for a feature wall of photos, a fun home classroom or bedroom for kids and corporate offices.

Here’s a little video from Magwall to inspire you:

What do you think? I even gave our old chalk board a new lick of paint.

Go on, get creative ! Keep your eyes open for a fantastic giveaway up on the blog soon.

Disclaimer: I received Magwall products to test and review.

Love Local – LABEL Collections

Love Local – LABEL Collections

The “love local” series focuses on local, South African, women who are making waves in their industries. Breaking boundaries, creating empires and being the best inspiration of strong, driven women to society. This week I’m featuring the incredibly talented Nadia Turton, Founder and creator of “LABEL Collections”. Nadia began working in the retail industry where she learned the basics and gained an idea of what she liked before graduating from Cape Tech with a degree in fashion design. She spent two years in London before returning to Cape Town where she gained experience designing for retailers Truworths, Foschini and Edgars before finally launching LABEL Collections.

I have always been a more “classical” style when it comes to fashion trends, preferring items that I can wear year after year and perhaps mixing it up with one or two key pieces. I have always admired LABEL Collections style and cuts and when I found out the company was local, I had to find out more!

LABEL Collections is about luxury, quality, simplicity and integrity.

With the intention to design pieces that are for longevity and not landfill, always chic and comfortable, reflecting the confidence and versatility of their global customer.

Subtle signature LABEL Collections details allow us to evolve rather than re-invent. We love that you can purchase less and receive so much more wear, season after season, out of every LABEL Collections piece. Team the first seasons dress with this seasons coat for an instant wardrobe update.

Their collection is produced locally, where Nadia personally sources the fabrics and trims which are then created into our beautiful, easily wearable Cape Town made garments. Limited quantities of each style are produced, keeping it exclusive. Their goal is to create jobs and support positive social, cultural and environmental shifts.

Feminine, contemporary, effortless chic designs set LABEL Collections apart.

Nadia, creator of LABEL Collections, lives in Cape Town with her husband and two boisterous pugs.

Read on below to find out more about Nadia and her career journey thus far.

Tell me more about yourself and what you currently do?

More about myself, well I love surfing, trail running, mountain biking, Gin and all things pretty. My favourite thing to do is spending time with family and friends and sharing a few G&T’s and see who can create the best G&T.

What I currently do? EVERYTHING – haha, So a quick run down of the process of getting a garment onto the online store and into boutques coutnry wide: First I research trends, including silhouetes, fabrics, trims, garment finishes and then I put a mood board / inspiration board together. From here I decide which direction we’ll be going this season – so many different trends and influences to be considered, I then adapt it to fit the brand and our ethos. Next step is to design the new collection, broken down into assortments – so tops, bottoms, caots / jackets, dress (knits & wovens). Once I have the basis of the collection, I then start to weigh up each design. Does it fit the brand ethos – is it chic, comfortable, easy to wear, easy to style and does it have longevity, would it be able to be worn for more than one season? Only once it has ticked all these does it crack the knod to be included into the collection. From here we source and purchase fabrics, have patterns made and then we go into production. When I see final products, I feel like a kid on Christmas day. It is the best feeling (and never goes away) when you see the actual garment made and ready to go to store. In between we arrange photo shoots for the online store and a lot of admin.

How did “Label Collections” come about?

After designing at various studios and for the retailers, I decided to branch out on my own and start LABEL Collections.

What did you study – was it in this field or something different?

I studied Fashion Design. Traveled for 2 years and then started working as a designer at a studio who supplies the major chain stores.

What was your first job and how did you progress to this?

My first job ever was as a casual sales assistant at Stuttafords and then at Juanita Pacheco while studying fashion design. At Juanita Pacheco I learned a tremendous amount about owning a store and implemented those systems when I owned my own boutique store.

What have been the highlights?

Selling my first collection to a boutique.

Seeing someone besides family and friends wearing one of my garments

My first magazine feature

Opening my own factory and employing my first ever staff member and growing from there

Owning a boutique store

Everytime I receive an order from our online store – it still makes my day EVERY SINGLE TIME!

I am grateful for every single customer and brand follower we have!

Finding and building an incredible team to work with.

What’s the best part of your job?

Seeing people wear the garments I have designed and the LABEL team has made!

It is so rewarding for us and makes what we do so worth it.

What is the most challenging part?

The most challenging part is to not produce everything we love and want to.

It is definitely that edit we do after conceptualising the collection. It often takes us weeks to decide on the final collection.

Describe a typical day in your life.

Every day is different, but I normally start with COFFEE @ 5:30 maybe 6 am if I am really lazy. Then I do something fun like surfing, riding, running or yoga, it starts the day right and somehow makes me more focused.. And then at about 7:30 / 8 am I start with emails, then at about 9 am with my rounds (going to fabric suppliers, trim suppliers, pattern maker, graders, cutters and then the factories). And then back to the office for more emails, research, processing orders, sorting orders etc. Work never stops, I am always thinking about the collections, always searching for something awesome to use or incorporate or just be inspired in general. I try and switch my Mac off at about 4:30 / 5, otherwise I’ll continue and never stop.

What are the “secrets” to your success?

I don’t think I have any “secrets”. I think it is just perseverance and grit. Trust your gut. Keep the end goal in mind – always.

How do you balance it all?

It is easy – only kidding. Somedays better than others!

What is your dream for Label Collections?

To grow the company and by doing so, to create jobs and support positive social, cultural and environmental shifts with in our local community and South Africa. We would like to continue to design pieces that are for longevity and not landfill, always chic and comfortable, reflecting the confidence and versatility of our global customer. To continue to build a community around our brand with followers and fans that are as passionate about and love the brand as we do. We really do love and value our customers and followers.

Review – La Beaute on the Lake

Review – La Beaute on the Lake

Set in an unassuming suburb in Parkview, on a leafy residential street lies a hidden gem in the aesthetics world.

I’ve been battling with my skin for the past few months, largely down to lack of water and sleep, and I reached out to people asking for recommendations. When 3 people all suggest the same place, in fact, the same therapist, you know that it must be something special.

Wanting more than just your “cut and paste” facial, I was eager to find a more personal Spa. I needed a professional who would analyse my skin and treat it appropriately, La Beaute on the Lake, did just that.

As soon as I found the right place (there is no sign outside), I stepped into a relaxed, tranquil environment with nothing but the sound of the huge oak trees rustling in the wind.

The rooms are comfortable and well presented, and the beauty therapists are warm, friendly and highly knowledgeable. Tebogo assessed my skin and recommended a combined treatment to target breakouts as well as a brightening complex. She recommended the DermaFix range for my skin. When I go for treatments I don’t like to talk, I can literally fall asleep during a wax! Spa time is my only time to just be, so I enjoyed the fact that Tebogo didn’t talk too much during the treatment. After a great cleanse and steam we moved through to the unavoidable extractions, which I made through without a tear. High frequency was done to promote circulation and prevent any more breakouts from occurring and the facial was finished off with two mask treatments, one of which is reusable and I got to bring home!

After my facial I was treated to a JelliSpa Pedi. I’ve heard a bit about this “JelliSpa” stuff being used in Pedi’s, but as most mums know, I haven’t had a chance to experience one for myself. Think thousands of jelly like balls (akin to tapioca) all working to hydrate your feet. What a treat! The mom in me popped up and I knew I had to try some sensory activities with the boys (see pic below).

Overall: I was pleasantly surprised. I lived in the area for years and never knew La Beaute on the Lake existed! It’s clean, comfortable and what gives in the star factor is certainly the dedicated therapists. Surprisingly, their pricing is not bad at all!

It offers treatments such as laser hair removal (next on my list along with the LED treatments), facials, microdermabrasion, and manis/pedis. They also offer a range of “non-surgical facelifts”, photo-rejuvenation and pigmentation treatments, and the latest rage, DermaPen needling systems. Products used include Matis, TheraVine, RegimA and DermaFix.

Top 20 Child friendly Cafes and Restaurants in Johannesburg

Top 20 Child friendly Cafes and Restaurants in Johannesburg

Its taken some time to compile this list, and many a weekend wanting to go for a lunch somewhere but wanting somewhere the boys can run and play. These are my favourite outdoor restaurants, with a play area for kids, if you are looking for more of a general list of things to do or places to go with kids in Joburg you can see my previous blog here .

Some obvious, a lot are hidden gems. Hopefully this list will make your weekends a little easier.

Top of the list we will get the most obvious out-of-the-way, the spurs and the pappachinos.

For me personally, the best two spurs in terms of play area’s for the kids are: Spur Morning Glen mall (Corner of Bowling and Rivonia) – The outside kiddie area here is lovely, with ships and aeroplanes. Grey Wolf Spur – Broadacres – Sadly both of these are not halaal, so we tend to take out kids there when we have waffles and Ice cream.

Pappachinos – Again my two personal favourites are Broadacres and Clearwater – I love the outdoor play areas for the kids and Broadacres even has a putt putt course and soccer nets.

Now for the hidden gems…

Northern Suburbs

Munch – Bryanston. There are 4 in the northern suburbs but the Bryanston branch is situated inside the Garden Shop it has a beautiful play area for kids and children can also take delight in the curious animals at the Reptile shop.

Buitengeluk – Broadacres. Set in a beautiful Cape Dutch landscape this remains one of my firm favourites in Johannesburg, with the most exquisite gardens with ponds and ducks it can also host weddings and various celebrations. Just around the back they have the most glorious play area for kids, complete with jumping castles and trampolines. You wont find a prettier place to sit admiring the gardens while your children happily play.

Ristretto – Morningside. Offers two play areas, one perfect for toddlers and a bigger kids area as well. The child minders are terrifically friendly and the pizza makes it all worth while.

The Green Garden café -The Purple Tulip . Broadacres – A haven for kids, this café is set inside a nursery and has attentive staff and a donkey cart for kids to ride on. A fun morning out whenever you choose to go.

River Café -Sandton. Closed on Mondays. One of my favourites set next to the Sandton Field and Study Centre. Endless amounts of grass for the kids to ride one of their many plastic motorbikes and the perfect patch of sand for a sand pit. It’s the perfect place to stop for a healthy breakfast after a walk in the park.

Gia’s on Montrose – Morningside. There is a jungle gym on site to keep the little ones occupied, beautiful gardens suited for any member of the family. Gia’s has been around for a while and is a firm favourite with residents in the area.

State 5 – Witkoppen road. The centre offers a wide variety for kids, with a great kids play area and lots of arts and crafts shops around it, I am never disappointed. The kids play area is better suited for younger children though.

The secret tea garden – Norscot Manor – The Secret Garden offers a quiet escape from the malls and roadside coffee shops. Beautiful manicured lawns and an impressive play park for the kids. Perfect for a Saturday or Sunday morning brunch.

The Oak Leaf Restaurant – Sandton. Set amongst large leafy trees the Oak Leaf offers a homely environment with a wonderful kiddies play area. Right in the middle of sSndton it’s a lovely escape with caring and attentive child minders.

Olive and Twist – Northriding. A great little Italian restaurant with a fantastic kids space. Children are looked after by child minders, they have a variety of educational things for the kids to do.

Johannesburg Central

Rustic café – Blairgowrie. Set in a sports ground, rustic café is not your typical sports club restaurant. It makes a mean coffee and has a perfect little jungle gym outside. If your kids are sports fans like mine it’s also the perfect place to sit back and watch a local game.

The Noisy Rooster – Rosebank. Bringing free range food right to our door step. The Noisy Rooster is set in an unassuming suburb in Rosebank. Kids can choose from a number of different jungle gyms and trampolines or choose to pet the rabbits or partake in one of their creative crafts, dress up days, or story time.

Bambanani – Melville. A bit like a pappachinos setting – Bambanani has more of a homely feel. With a fantastic ratio of child minders to child, they have a fantasy play corner, arts and crafts as well as the traditional soft play equipment.

Delta Café –Craighall Park. Closed on Mondays. A hidden gem inside Delta Park it’s a perfect spot to grab a light bit to eat while taking in the beauty of the park around you. Their friendly staff and cute little play area for the kids always bring people back in.

Johannesburg West

Tres Jolie – Ruimsig. The perfect place for some relaxation and fresh air. Sprawling gardens and pretty water features, this is definitely the place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Not only do they have a fantastic play area they also have the most perfect little farmyard where Kids can feed the animals or take a Camel ride.

256 on Smit – Fairlands. Friendly staff with a super little hairdresser and masseuse right next door this is also set in an unassuming suburb in Fairlands. The play area is cleverly designed in the middle so you can watch your little ones from pretty much anywhere. They also have an aviary and some bunnies.

iPlay – Randpark Ridge. iPlay Party Venue, Coffee shop, Toy Shop and Kiddies play area. Great child friendly restaurant with kids playground and sandpit.

Johannesburg East/ South

A Churrasqueira Alberton. Fantastic Portuguese restaurant in the south. They can get a little busy which can leave you calling for your waiter but the fantastic kids play area and the fact that kids can make their own pizza, make up for it.

Two Trees Bakery – Klipriversberg. Ive yet to come across a place with as much Jungle Gym equipment for kids as Two trees do. They have zip lines catering to both older and younger kids and brilliant big seat swings for the whole family to swing in. Kids can decorate gingerbread cookies as well.

Kiddilicious – Bedfordview. So much more than just a café. Kiddilicious offers a great little café, country-style play areas, a party venue as well as a mother and baby wellness clinic.

Do you have any other places you would recommend? Id love to hear from you and your suggestions or feedback. For a full list of places to go with activities for kids you can see my previous post here.

HICH SOUTH AFRICA – Instilling compassion and conservation in our children

HICH SOUTH AFRICA – Instilling compassion and conservation in our children

We live in a country so blessed to still have wild animals roaming, largely free. We really don’t appreciate how amazing this is until you have lived oversea’s. I grew up in Botswana where conservation is high up on our priority list and I literally had elephants picking fruit from the tree’s in my parent’s backyard. As parents we need teach our children about the importance of animal conservation, this is our only planet.

I remember taking Aadam to the Zoo as a toddler and seeing to beautiful rhinos with their huge horns interlocked. I stood there for quite some time in awe of their beauty, but also sad at the thought of my child possibly never growing up to see a Rhino, with its beautiful horns in tact, roaming in the wild.

A few weeks ago I was approached about a clothing brand, HICH South Africa, that focused on animal wellness and conservation, naturally, I jumped at the chance to help spread the word. My boys are both animal mad, we spend half our day pretending to be some animal or another and they are instantly drawn to animals . Aadam pet his first cheetah before he was 2!

HICH South Africa’s online store launched on 15 December 2017. Each T-shirt holds a powerful message, from saving our rhinos to protecting pitbulls.

Founded by a mother-daughter partnership, HICH stands for – Humility, Integrity, Compassion, Hardwork – all values I wants my children to have and live.

Their designs are young and colourful with the main aim being to bring awareness to animal welfare. A portion of their profits go to various local and national animal shelters and wildlife organisations.

As I was browsing through the 8 designs, I immediately jumped at the “save our rhinos” design as this is a cause I am so passionate in. I also picked “Be Kind to animals” – you can truly tell the heart of a person by the way they treat their animals, and Aadam loves to hug and pet animals. I grew up on a farm, surrounded by animals and every chance I get I take my boys to farms to interact and learn how to care for animals. The range of slogans depicts current conservation issues, with choices such as “Adopt, don’t shop”, “#supportlocalanimalshelters”, “Be kind to animals” and “protectourwildlife”

The range starts from age 3 up to age 12 and the designs retail for R220 each. They are a loose fit and 100% pure cotton, beautifully soft and excellent quality. They make it so easy for us to give back and help us to raise awareness, not that we even needed another reason to shop. You can shop the designs here.
