Easiest Salt Dough Recipe

We started a tradition in our house of making salt dough ornaments and keep sakes for Christmas to give out to family members and friends. What I love most about these Salt Dough ornaments is that they literally have 3 ingredients and you will definitely have everything in your kitchen !

It really is the easiest recipe and such a fun easy craft to do with the kids. It takes less than 5 minutes to make the dough. Depending on how many ornaments you want to make you can halve this recipe, as I did in the video below.

You can watch the video tutorial here before you get started.

We love focusing on crafts during holiday season and with these ornaments the sky is the limit, a simple scroll through pintrest will show you endless ideas to make with Salt Dough, from Santa handprints, reindeer, penguin, hearts, anything you wish. You can go wild with decorating, adding glitter, buttons, tiles or just plain paint.

I let my boys to do most of the painting themselves to keep it more personal. Once you are done seal with a clear glaze spray or even clear nail varnish !

Recipe for Salt Dough:

4 cups flour

1 cup salt

1.5 cups water

  1. Preheat your oven to 100 degrees Celsius.
  2. Combine all of your ingredients and knead. If your dough is too dry add a little bit more water.
  3. Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1.5 cm
  4. Using a cookie cutter of your choice cut out your shapes, if you are making handprints, use a side plate to cut a circle first and then have your child place their hand on that circle.
  5. Using a straw, make a hole in the top for where you want to hang your salt dough ornament.
  6. Bake for about 2 hours. If your ornaments are still soft to touch, put back in for another hour. (It will depend on your thickness how long you need to bake for. The thinner ornaments will take less time but thicker may take more).
  7. Once cooled, decorate as you wish.
  8. Finish with a varnish.

Happy Crafting this holiday season!
