Here its is, the easiest, super long-lasting playdough recipe that I have ever come across.
I know I have been promising this one for a while, so sorry for the delay, but I had to make it again, because I didn’t take photos for the blog the first time I did it 🙂
I originally made it in a deep dark blue with mountains of glitter and stars as I wanted it to resemble the night sky for a project I was doing for the kids. That’s when I stumbled upon Stephanie’s recipe over at “Two-daloo’s”” .
You SHOULD have all of the ingredients in your cupboard, though to be honest I only started keeping cream of tartar in the cupboard after I started to make my own playdough.
Ingredients:
1 Cup flour
1 cup water
Food colouring of your choice – The gel kind give a much more vibrant colour.
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 tablespoon of Oil
1/3 cup salt
1 teaspoon unflavoured gelatine
Glitter (If you wish)
This is the only playdough recipe I do on the stove top. Honestly, normally I wouldn’t have the time, or patience for that. Originally I wanted something “more” than just a playdough, I wanted that X-factor. The gelatine in this does just that. It adds an extra stretch (very subtle) and SOMEHOW this playdough lasts for months! I made the original version in June (It’s now 1 day away from November) and I am only starting to think of throwing it out. So here’s how:
Add the water and food colouring to a pot on high heat (the more food colouring, the better the colour), add the gelatine, stirring until dissolved. Turn down the heat once dissolved and add all the other ingredients. Stir until the dough clumps together (it will still look a little sticky). Take it off the heat and turn it out. Once it’s cool enough to tough give it a good knead until the stickiness subsides and it comes together. Once its cool add in your glitter, you can see from the pics the more glitter the merrier. It’s also better to use one with a slightly “bigger” grain to show up in the play dough. Seeing as though we are almost in November I went with Christmas colours of red and white this time, through I’m sure in about two days it will all end up in one merged mess.
I love playdough activities for my kids and they are so stimulating across all senses. If you like you could even add a little scented oil to your dough. I often give my kids different materials or objects to use with their playdough to expand their imagination and encourage creativity.
However you let your children play, I hope this recipe works as well for you as it did for me !
I definitely plan on making this over the weekend with the kiddos.
I don’t keep tartar or gelatin on hand, but otherwise, we do have the rest! I could see this being a fun project when my daughter is older.
I’ve been looking for a cool playdough recipe to make with my littles and this one seems perfect. I can’t wait to try it out.

I cannot wait to try this out with Oli and Soph, we need some more playdough, so going to give this one a try this weekend!
Great recipe! my toddler is completly obsessed with playdoh right now and this would be the perfect fit for him.
This is great! I can’t wait for my little one to get a little older so we can play with play dough and not have to worry about him eating it. Great DIY.
